Help Raise PTSD Awareness
There are currently about 12 million people in the United States with PTSD. Even though PTSD treatments work, most people who have PTSD don’t get the help they need. Help us spread the word that effective PTSD treatments are available. Everyone with PTSD—whether they are Veterans or civilians who experienced sexual assault, serious accidents, natural disasters, or other traumatic events—needs to know that treatments really do work and can lead to a better quality of life.

What is PTSD?
PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after an individual experiences or witnesses a traumatic event. The symptoms may include:
-
Intrusive thoughts (flashbacks or nightmares)
-
Avoidance behaviors (steering clear of reminders of the trauma)
-
Negative changes in mood (feeling numb, detached, or hopeless)
-
Heightened arousal (difficulty sleeping, irritability, or being easily startled)
It’s important to understand that PTSD doesn’t just disappear with time. The healing process is unique to each person, and with the right support, therapy, and understanding, it is possible to manage and live a fulfilling life.
Why Awareness Matters
Raising awareness about PTSD is more than just sharing information—it’s about breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. Often, individuals struggling with PTSD feel isolated or misunderstood, and many hesitate to seek help due to fear of judgment or misconceptions. By openly discussing PTSD, we can reduce the stigma, encourage healing, and ensure that those affected know they are not alone.
Supporting Loved Ones
If you or someone you know is experiencing PTSD, it’s important to seek professional support. Therapy options, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), have been shown to help individuals process and manage their trauma.
At Wholistic Counseling, we have clinicians on staff with years of experience working with veterans and individuals with PTSD. Our team is dedicated to providing a safe, supportive, and empathetic environment for healing. Whether you’re looking for individual therapy or group support, our professionals are here to guide you through the journey toward recovery.
In addition, simple acts of kindness and empathy can make a world of difference for someone dealing with PTSD. Let them know they are heard and supported. If they’re not ready to open up, respect their space but be available when they are ready.
Ways to Get Involved
1. Educate Yourself and Others
Learn more about PTSD and share that knowledge with others.
2. Support PTSD Organizations
Consider donating to or volunteering with organizations dedicated to PTSD awareness and support.
3. Promote Mental Health Conversations
By normalizing conversations around mental health, we can help reduce the stigma associated with PTSD and encourage others to seek help.
Conclusion
As we honor PTSD Awareness Month, let’s reflect on how we can contribute to the healing process. Whether it’s offering support to a loved one, donating to an organization, or simply educating ourselves, every effort counts. By coming together to raise awareness and promote understanding, we can help pave the way for a world where those affected by PTSD feel empowered to heal and live fulfilling lives.
